Day 53

With Halloween fast approaching, I’m curious to know what you plan on giving out as “treats” for the trick-or-treaters that will come to your door. Has anyone ever celebrated Halloween in a different way than going door to door for candy? I know all the pagan beliefs of the origination of the holiday and I’m not going to debate that. That’s not what I’m interested in right now. I’m thinking more about the enormous amount of candy and sugar and processed things the kids will be gathering up on Halloween night. At the meeting I attended last week at the local health department, we were talking about how kids go to the local quick stop after school and eat junk so does it really matter what they eat in school. (Yes! It does matter by the way) One gentleman, a retired school administrator, chuckled and said, “Halloween is just around the corner, you can’t give ‘em apples.”  Another person said, “Why not?” The room got eerily quiet for a moment. I kept my mouth shut but inside I was thinking “Yeah! Why not?”
What are the options? What else is there to give out besides candy? I say, use your imagination!! Will kids accept something other than candy? Of course they will! Kids are smart! Try individual raisin boxes, cheese and crackers, juice boxes, stickers, bookmarks, or toothbrushes!! Candy is expensive!! Try looking at your local dollar store-they have some great finds!

  1. Okay, now you will be the worst house on the block if you give away apples! That is no fun and no one wants an apple on Halloween. You can of course do it if you want, but don't expect many kids to come to your house because word will spread quickly that you are giving away apples on Halloween and kids will stay clear! Now, I am all for the other ideas like stickers, bouncy balls, etc. but even toothbrushes are stretching it. That is just weird, but I wouldn't expect anything less :) Again, all for something else besides candy but stay away from the apples.....seriously.
