I found an interesting little tidbit of information this morning that I wanted to share with you. Only 8% of people eat enough fruits a day and only 6% of people eat enough vegetables a day. That seems like an amazingly low number to me! So why are so many people failing? Many reasons – Junk food is cheaper than fruit and vegetables. Junk food has a better shelf life. Junk food has been engineered to taste good and is advertised to consumers relentlessly. There’s also a marketing issue. Since there is no processing to be done, fruits and vegetables are commodities. They cannot be branded. And when you can’t brand something, you can’t market it. Think about it, when was the last time you saw a commercial for apples? The next time you have the tv on Saturday morning, notice what kinds of food are advertised for the kids that are watching cartoons.
I have an idea for a one day challenge for you! The next time you go grocery shopping don’t buy anything in a box. I mean really grocery shopping, not just stopping by to pick up milk – that doesn’t count. See how you do!!
